Kenten (Akkeshi)

A Hokkaido based company that opened the Akkeshi Distillery in 2016, explicitly inspired by Islay's peat forward, maritime whisky tradition. Akkeshi's location on Hokkaido's foggy, cold eastern coast provides conditions remarkably similar to Scotland's west coast. The distillery has gained a devoted following through its "24 Solar Terms" series of limited seasonal releases. Despite being a young distillery, Akkeshi's peated, maritime style whiskies are "consistently excellent" according to the r/JapaneseWhisky community. The main criticism is price: bottles range from ¥18,000 to ¥32,000 in Japan and significantly more abroad.
