A Tottori based producer that has attracted significant controversy in the Japanese whisky community. Matsui Shuzo produces the Kurayoshi and Matsui brand whiskies, but JSLMA compliance has been questioned because they have historically used imported malt whisky. The Kurayoshi range especially drew criticism when it was revealed that the age statement bottles contained little to no whisky actually distilled at their facility. The company has since built their own distillery (Matsui Distillery/Kurayoshi Distillery), but the community remains skeptical. If you see Kurayoshi on a shelf, be aware of this sourcing history.
