Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. (Asahi Group)
Founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the "Father of Japanese Whisky," who trained at several Scottish distilleries and brought whisky making knowledge to Japan. Nikka operates two distilleries with distinctly different characters: Yoichi in Hokkaido (robust, peaty, maritime) and Miyagikyo in Sendai (elegant, fruity, floral). The company also owns Ben Nevis distillery in Scotland. Nikka is widely considered the connoisseur's choice in Japanese whisky, favored by enthusiasts who appreciate their more complex, less polished style compared to Suntory's refined elegance. Now owned by the Asahi Group, Nikka produces everything from the hugely popular Nikka From The Barrel to highly sought after single cask releases.
Masataka Taketsuru's story is one of the great romantic tales in spirits history. In 1918, he traveled to Scotland to study organic chemistry and apprenticed at several distilleries. He married Rita Cowan, a Scottish woman, and returned to Japan with both a wife and encyclopedic whisky making knowledge. He first worked for Suntory at Yamazaki before leaving to establish his own distillery in Yoichi, Hokkaido, chosen for its climate and geography reminiscent of Scotland. The Yoichi distillery, with its coal fired pot stills (among the last in the world), produces a bold, characterful whisky that stands apart in the Japanese landscape. Nikka's second distillery, Miyagikyo, opened in 1969 in the lush Miyagi prefecture to provide a lighter, more delicate counterpoint to Yoichi. This dual distillery approach gives Nikka's blenders an enormous palette to work with, most famously showcased in Nikka From The Barrel, a blend of malt and grain whiskies bottled at 51.4% ABV that has become arguably the best value proposition in Japanese whisky globally. The Coffey Grain and Coffey Malt expressions, distilled on Nikka's original 1963 Coffey (continuous column) stills, have earned cult followings for their distinctive sweetness and character. Nikka's reputation in the enthusiast community is arguably stronger than Suntory's, with fans praising their commitment to flavor over marketing polish.
