Akkeshi Single Malt Risshun
厚岸 立春
About
The 14th release in Akkeshi's Twenty Four Seasons series and the most heavily peated expression to date. Risshun means "the beginning of spring" and is the very first of the 24 solar terms. Features 5 year old Hokkaido grown malt aged primarily in ex bourbon barrels with accents of mizunara and sherry. A landmark release representing Akkeshi's growing maturity.
Tasting Notes
Palo santo, sea salt, grilled persimmon, citrus
Big and smoky with bold peat, charred wood, tropical fruit, sweet malt
Long and heavily peated with lingering maritime saltiness
What People Are Saying
Akkeshi Risshun is part of the highly collectible 24 Solar Terms series that has built a dedicated following on r/JapaneseWhisky. The community describes Akkeshi as "consistently excellent" and draws frequent comparisons to Islay Scotch due to the distillery's peat forward, maritime style. The main criticism is the price: at ¥18,000 to ¥20,000 per bottle in Japan and much more internationally, many feel the quality is there but the value proposition is challenging. The seasonal release schedule creates excitement and FOMO in the community.
